Oculus: vitreoretinal surgery

In the 1980s, Wetzlar-based OCULUS Optikgeräte GmbH collaborated with Professor Spitznas, former Director of the University of Bonn Eye Clinic, and Professor Reiner, former Director of the Cologne Technical School of Ophthalmic Optics, to develop the world's first non-contact wide-angle viewing system for vitreoretinal surgery: the SDI®/BIOM®. This system set a new world standard for vitreoretinal surgery using a wide-angle visualization system.

The world market leader, SDI®/BIOM® is distributed in Germany directly by OCULUS. To enhance the care offered to its exclusive customers, ophthalmic surgeons, OCULUS has created a specialized department called “OCULUS Surgical”. This team of specialists focuses on the continuous improvement of existing products, training and distribution.

The SDI®/BIOM® system product range continues to expand. In 2013, the new BIOM® ready was introduced, becoming the world's first disposable wide-angle vision system. OCULUS quality disposable lenses, known as BIOM® Optic Sets, complete the range of disposable products.

OCULUS products for vitreoretinal surgery are sold worldwide by around a hundred qualified specialist distributors, who also support the service needs of their international customers.
