ARTAS : A robot-assisted hair transplant solution for natural, reproducible and highly safe results
The 9x ARTAS™ is a robotic FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) hair transplant system developed by Restoration Robotics to automate the critical steps of hair transplantation: graft harvesting and recipient site creation. Designed for healthcare professionals specialising in hair restoration, the 9x ARTAS™ combines high-precision robotics, artificial intelligence, 3D stereoscopic vision and software-assisted planning to ensure consistent, reproducible and aesthetically natural results.
The extraction stage is performed by a robotic arm with six degrees of freedom, equipped with a motorised needle mechanism that allows for precise dissection of the follicular units. The robot identifies each follicle in real time using its high-resolution stereo camera system, which is capable of measuring the angle, direction and depth of each hair. The practitioner can customise the dissection parameters, such as puncture depth, approach angle and extraction density, directly via the touchscreen user interface.
Thanks to this automation, the 9x ARTAS™ guarantees a significant reduction in damage to surrounding tissue, consistent extraction and, therefore, improved graft viability. This allows for more natural regrowth and reduces the risk of visible scars in the donor area.
The system is not limited to extraction. It also takes care of creating the recipient sites, an essential step in ensuring the aesthetic result of the transplant. Using the ARTAS Hair Studio™ software, the practitioner can model the patient's hairline in 3D and define the direction, density and distribution of the grafts. Once the plan has been approved, the robot automatically performs the incisions, carefully avoiding existing hair to preserve the native density.
This unique feature allows for a harmonious transplant, even in partially bald areas, and helps maximise the natural look of the final result. The robotic approach minimises human error and standardises results from one patient to another.
The 9x ARTAS™ is equipped with multiple safety systems: a physical emergency stop button (E-Stop), an emergency power cut-off (EPO), and force and collision sensors. In the event of unexpected movement, contact with resistant tissue or loss of visual reference, the system immediately stops the procedure to ensure patient safety. It also has a backup power supply (UPS) for safe shutdown in the event of a power failure.
Thanks to its ergonomic user interface, the system is accessible to trained teams, while allowing total control at every stage. The software guides operators through calibration, kit installation, patient preparation and per-procedure parameter management.
The 9x ARTAS™ reduces procedure time, improves graft accuracy and increases operator comfort. It helps standardise the quality of care while improving the patient experience, including faster recovery and discreet healing.
It is a strategic tool for leading hair clinics that want to differentiate themselves in a competitive market by offering innovative technology, reproducible results and a patient-centred approach.
