Radiolucent Drive 511.300: Optimisation of distal locking under fluoroscopic control
The Synthes Radiolucent Drive 511.300 is a specialised surgical tool designed to improve the accuracy and safety of distal locking of intramedullary nails. Thanks to its radiolucent design, it allows optimal visualisation of the drill and the locking hole on the image intensifier screen. This device is used in conjunction with the Colibri II (ref. 532.101), the adapter for Radiolucent Drive (ref. 532.031) and the AO/ASIF Quick Coupling attachment (ref. 05.001.250).
Before positioning the Radiolucent Drive, the image intensifier must be aligned so that the distal locking hole of the nail appears perfectly round and clearly visible. Once the incision has been made, the Radiolucent Drive is centred on the locking hole and the drill is positioned precisely using the integrated sighting rings. The device can be rotated into the desired working position, ensuring optimal ergonomics for the surgeon.
Safety and integrated mechanical protection
The Radiolucent Drive is equipped with a safety clutch that activates in the event of mechanical overload. This mechanism emits an audible clicking sound, signalling that the force applied exceeds the safety limits. This system protects the internal gears of the device and prevents potential damage due to improper handling or excessive resistance during drilling.
Several situations can lead to overload: correcting the drilling angle when the cutting edges of the drill bit are already engaged in the bone, or hitting the nail with the drill bit. In these cases, it is recommended to remove the drill bit until the flutes are visible, then resume drilling or reposition the device. If necessary, the drill bit should be replaced.
Compatibility and precautions for use
The Radiolucent Drive is only compatible with three-fluted drill bits specifically designed for this system. Synthes recommends handling the device with care, avoiding any contact between the drill bit and the intramedullary nail. It is also advisable to hold the Radiolucent Drive firmly when starting the Colibri II, especially when the tool is pointing downwards.
Depending on the image intensifier settings, a non-radiolucent area may appear at the rear of the device. However, this does not affect the accuracy of centring or the effectiveness of drilling. Thanks to its robust design and features, the Radiolucent Drive 511.300 is a reliable solution for surgical procedures requiring precise and secure distal locking.
