Frac-950 - Fraction collector for preparative and analytical chromatography
The Amersham Frac-950 is a high-precision fraction collector designed to automate the collection of samples from chromatography columns, particularly in ÄKTAdesign systems controlled by UNICORN software. Offering remarkable flexibility thanks to its compatibility with multiple tube and microplate formats and its dual operating mode ( standard and preparative), the Frac 950 is an essential piece of equipment for the automated purification of biomolecules.
In standard mode, the capillary remains fixed while the rack moves according to programmed movements (line by line, column by column or serpentine mode). This operation is optimised for small-volume tubes and maximum precision. Conversely, in preparative mode, the rack remains fixed and the distribution arm moves, allowing large volumes to be collected in large bottles or vials, which is typical of production or scale-up applications.
The system allows up to 392 fractions to be collected per method, with time or volume definition and peak detection if required. Thanks to its two loss reduction technologies – DropSync, which synchronises tube changeover with drop fall, and Accumulator, which temporarily stores the flow during changeover – the Frac-950 ensures continuous flow without sample loss, even at high flow rates (up to 100 ml/min).
The device is compatible with six types of racks (four for standard mode, two for preparative mode) and accepts a wide range of tubes, microplates or bottles up to 250 ml.
The Frac-950 connects directly to a UNICORN system (v3.21 minimum for standard mode, v4.0 for preparative mode) via a UniNet 1 network, and its software interface allows selection of tubes, fractionation method, delay volume and much more. It integrates seamlessly with ÄKTAdesign systems, enhancing traceability and automation of purification procedures.
Easy to maintain, designed for safe and robust use, it operates in demanding laboratory environments (from +4 to +40°C) and complies with CE standards for electrical safety and electromagnetic compatibility. Its ergonomics and modularity make it a central instrument for laboratories working on proteins, antibodies or any other biomolecule purified by liquid chromatography.
