Agilent G2226A: nanoliter flow pump for high-precision liquid chromatography
Agilent's G2226A pump is a key component of the 1260 Infinity system, specially designed for ultra-low flow chromatography applications. It is based on a dual-channel architecture, each equipped with two pistons in series, enabling precise and stable solvent delivery. Thanks to its electronic flow control system, the pump automatically adjusts the flow rate according to the pressure and properties of the solvent, ensuring remarkable consistency in the most demanding analytical conditions.
The G2226A pump is capable of generating gradients by high-pressure mixing, with flexible solvent selection via dedicated valves. It incorporates an electromagnetic proportional valve (EMPV) coupled with a thermal flow sensor, ensuring fine regulation of the flow to the column. This system allows excess solvent to be diverted to waste, while maintaining a stable composition of the main flow. The delay volume is reduced to a few hundred nanolitres, optimising the resolution and sensitivity of the analyses.
Performance and precision for nano-LC applications
The G2226A is designed to operate in a flow range from 0.01 to 4 µL/min, with a typical flow accuracy of 0.4% RSD. It offers user-adjustable compressibility compensation, allowing the system to be adapted to the specific characteristics of the solvents used. Flow control is provided by a thermal sensor calibrated for different mixtures, ensuring reliable measurement even at flow rates below one microlitre per minute.
The piston system uses a ball screw mechanism driven by a variable reluctance motor, ensuring synchronised movement and pressure consistency. The pump automatically adjusts the stroke volume according to the required flow rate, minimising pulsations and improving the reproducibility of results. In micro mode, the flow sensor precisely controls the flow to the column, while in standard mode, the entire main flow is directed to the LC system.
Integration, maintenance and compliance of the Agilent G2226A model
The G2226A is equipped with diagnostic and proactive maintenance features, including the Early Maintenance Feedback (EMF) system, which monitors the wear of critical components such as seals and pistons. It is compatible with Agilent control software (ChemStation, OpenLab, Lab Advisor) and has CAN, RS-232C and LAN interfaces for seamless integration into laboratory environments. Its modular design facilitates access to internal components for maintenance, while complying with safety and compliance standards (CE, UL, IEC).
Its housing is designed to minimise electromagnetic interference and optimise heat dissipation. Materials in contact with solvents are selected for their chemical inertness, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of mobile phases. The pump can be used in systems registered for in vitro diagnostics, subject to regulatory compliance.
