Thermo Scientific HERAsafe KS18 biological safety cabinet: performance, ergonomics and safety combined
The HERAsafe KS18 is a Class II biological safety cabinet designed to meet the rigorous requirements of modern laboratories, particularly those operating in the research, pharmaceutical, biotechnology and quality control sectors. This hood offers three-way protection: for personnel, the product being handled and the external environment, in accordance with EN 12469, NSF/ANSI 49 and DIN 12980 standards. Its design combines safety, ease of use and energy efficiency, making the KS18 model a benchmark solution for biosafety environments of levels 1 to 3.
The KS18 model, measuring 1.80 m wide, is the most spacious version in the HERAsafe KS range. It is equipped with a high-efficiency filtration system (HEPA H14) guaranteeing 99 .995% retention of particles at the most penetrating size (MPPS). This filtration capacity maintains a reliable containment barrier, ensuring a sterile atmosphere within the work area and maximum protection against cross-contamination or exposure to biological agents.
Ergonomics is at the heart of the HERAsafe design. The motorised front window, which opens 250 mm, can be adjusted effortlessly with the touch of a finger, facilitating handling while ensuring safety. The hood is also equipped with a digital display at eye level, providing real-time information on essential safety parameters: downward flow velocity, filter status, operating anomalies, UV-C timer, etc.
SmartFlow™ technology maintains a constant air flow rate, even in the event of gradual filter clogging or temporary obstruction. Pressure sensors continuously monitor the air flow distribution across the entire work surface. In the event of a fault, independent alarms immediately alert the operator.
From an energy perspective, the HERAsafe KS18 is equipped with brushless DC motors that consume significantly less energy than traditional AC motors, reducing not only operating costs but also heat emissions in the laboratory. Night mode (Night Set-Back) reduces the air flow when the window is closed, further increasing energy savings.
Designed for user comfort, the HERAsafe KS18 offers an optimal working posture thanks to a 10° tilt angle, a frameless glass pane, glazed side walls for excellent visibility, and ergonomic armrests. The 780 mm internal height of the work area allows for the handling of large samples, and the hood can be installed on a height-adjustable stand (manual or electric).
Maintenance is also easy: the front window opens completely for easy cleaning, and the rounded corners inside the chamber reduce areas where contaminants can accumulate. UV disinfection options are available, including an integrated or bracket-mounted transverse UV lamp.
Numerous accessories and configurations are available to adapt the hood to all types of applications: segmented work surfaces, additional carbon filters, direct or "thimble" air outlets, taps for gas, water, vacuum, baskets, suspension bars, among others.
