Thermo Fisher Scientific IC20: high-performance ion chromatography for demanding laboratories
The IC20 ion chromatograph from Thermo Fisher Scientific is a specialised instrument for isocratic ion analysis using conductivity detection. Thanks to the integration of a parallel piston pump system and precise detection electronics, the IC20 offers rigorous control of eluent flow and pressure, which is essential for obtaining reproducible results, even for analytes without significant UV absorption. The system uses a microprocessor to regulate operations and a digital signal processor (DSP) for fast flow and pressure control.
Operating in Direct or Method modes, the IC20 adapts to specific analysis requirements. Direct mode allows immediate execution of commands, while Method mode follows programmed sequences of time events. The IC20 can be operated locally using its front control panel or remotely viathe DX-LAN™ interface combined with PeakNet software, offering flexibility and ease of integration into existing systems.
The mechanical design includes a flow-through conductivity cell with optimised geometry to minimise dispersion and ensure excellent measurement linearity. Automatic temperature compensation enhances accuracy, while the option of mounting in an LC25 chromatographic oven is available to maintain stable thermal conditions.
Three model variants are available: a standard version without a degassing pump, one with a single-chamber degassing pump, and one with a double-chamber degassing pump coupled with an eluent selection valve. This allows for different laboratory configurations, depending on the need to manage multiple solvents or improve elution stability.
The internal structure is divided between an upper electronic chassis, which houses the control and interface cards, and a lower mechanical chassis, which houses the pump heads and hydraulic components. This separation facilitates access to the various units for maintenance and troubleshooting.
The front panel, equipped with a tiltable LCD screen and a membrane keyboard, provides intuitive navigation through the operational and diagnostic menus. The IC20 also incorporates safety features such as automatic shutdowns in the event of pressure exceedances and leak sensors, ensuring reliable and safe operation.
