IVAC® PCAM® syringe pump: the benchmark solution for patient-controlled analgesia
The IVAC® PCAM® syringe pump from Cardinal Health is specifically designed to meet the high demands of post-operative pain management in hospitals. Thanks to its PCA (Patient Controlled Analgesia) system, this pump allows patients to receive a precisely determined dose of analgesic on demand, in complete safety and under the control of parameters defined by medical staff.
This device promotes patient autonomy while effectively relieving acute pain. By simply pressing an intuitive patient remote control, the user triggers a bolus dose, provided that the lockout criteria and programmed limitations are met. This system allows for better pain management, reduces nursing interventions, and can contribute to a faster recovery after surgery.
The IVAC PCAM is equipped with a large graphic display that provides clear and detailed information on the infusion status, current protocols, and patient request history. This display also shows pressure and maximum dose curves, as well as clear visual alarms in the event of an anomaly. The user interface is divided into two secure access levels (key lock), separating nursing functions and clinical settings to prevent accidental changes.
The pump supports up to ten preconfigured PCA protocols , which can be customised according to therapeutic needs. It also offers a Clinician Override mode that allows nursing staff to administer a bolus or continuous infusion outside the PCA parameters, ideal for uncontrolled pain. Its automatic purge function facilitates system preparation prior to administration.
One of the great advantages of the IVAC PCAM is the wealth of historical data available at any time, with 24-hour graphs of successful or failed requests, the total amount of medication administered, and recorded events. This data can be printed for archiving or later analysis via a printer connected to the RS232 port.
The system accepts a wide range of standard 20 ml to 100 ml Luer lock syringes and offers a high level of accuracy (+/- 2% volumetric). Power is supplied by mains or internal battery with a 6-hour battery life. In the event of a power failure, the device automatically switches to battery power. Audible and visual alarms warn of any faults: excessive pressure, empty syringe, low battery, remote control disconnection, etc.
This pump has a versatile mounting system that allows it to be adapted to different clinical environments: intensive care, operating theatres, emergency rooms, neonatal units, etc. It complies with European safety and electromagnetic immunity standards, while remaining compact, portable and easy to maintain.
