Beckman Coulter JA-17 fixed-angle rotor: high-speed centrifugation performance and safety
The JA-17 fixed-angle rotor is a state-of-the-art centrifugation solution for laboratories demanding performance, reliability and safety. Designed for exclusive compatibility with Beckman Coulter J2, J6 and Avanti J series centrifuges, this rotor is specifically intended for intensive applications such as the sedimentation of cells, membranes and subcellular particles. It is also ideal for short column methods aimed at isolating different classes of organelles.
The JA-17 can hold up to 14 tubes of 50 mL each , allowing a total capacity of 700 mL per cycle. Its fixed angle of 25° ensures optimal separation, promoting even distribution of centrifugal force across the samples. With a maximum rotation speed of 17,000 rpm, it can generate a relative centrifugal force (RCF) of up to 39,800 × g, ensuring fast and efficient sedimentation, even for the smallest particles.
The rotor body and cover are made of anodised aluminium, giving the JA-17 excellent corrosion resistance. Two Buna N O-rings ensure a tight seal inside the rotor, reducing the risk of leaks and maintaining stable atmospheric pressure during centrifugation. This sealing system also provides protection against microbiological aerosols, validated by tests carried out in specialised centres such as CAMR in the United Kingdom and USAMRIID in the United States.
The JA-17 is equipped with integrated magnetic sensors for automatic identification in Avanti J-E models. Older rotors without magnets can still be used, although their maximum speed is then limited to 13,000 rpm.
The JA-17 is also designed for simple and secure installation. The integrated drive pins align precisely with the centrifuge hub, ensuring stable attachment during acceleration and deceleration phases. Its screw-on cover ensures reliable closure, while special tools such as the collar adapter and extraction tool facilitate removal, even if the rotor is stuck.
The rotor can be used with different types of polycarbonate or polypropylene tubes and bottles, some of which are designed to hold liquids either completely or partially, with or without caps. Temperature ranges are compatible from 2 to 25°C, and thermal compensation settings can be applied for analogue or microprocessor centrifuge models.
Easy to maintain, the JA-17 should be cleaned regularly with a mild solution (Beckman Solution 555 recommended) and lubricated with suitable products such as silicone vacuum grease or Spinkote lubricant. It can also be sterilised in an autoclave (up to 121°C) and disinfected with solutions such as ethanol or bleach, while following the instructions for use to avoid damage to the anodised aluminium.
