Covaris M220: a precise and optimised sonication system for biological sample preparation
The Covaris M220 is a benchtop ultrasonicator designed to meet the most demanding sample preparation requirements in biomolecular research laboratories. Utilising patented Adaptive Acoustic Focusing (AFA®) technology, this instrument offers isothermal, non-contact, highly controlled and reproducible sample processing, enabling fine DNA fragmentation, protein extraction and chromatin shearing.
The technological heart of the M220 is based on the application of focused ultrasonic energy transmitted through a water bath, ensuring uniform mechanical dispersion without excessive heating. Unlike conventional methods, this process limits thermal bias and degradation while ensuring optimal homogeneity from sample to sample. The system includes a high-intensity transducer coupled to a safety enclosure and an integrated thermal control device, allowing autonomous operation without the need for external cooling.
One of the major advantages of the M220 is its SonoLab 7 control software, supplied on a dedicated laptop. This software allows the creation, editing and execution of customised protocols called "methods", with real-time monitoring of power and temperature parameters. Predefined protocols, including for DNA shearing at different fragment sizes, are available and regularly updated by Covaris.
Users also benefit from integrated safety systems, such as a water level sensor and temperature detection, which ensure that conditions are optimal before the protocol is allowed to start. The safety lid must be closed before processing can begin, protecting operators from accidental exposure to acoustic energy.
The M220 is specially designed to work with Covaris microTUBEs, offering perfect compatibility with volumes ranging from 15 to 500 µL. Interchangeable sample holder inserts allow the instrument to be quickly adapted to specific user requirements.
