Olympus MAJ-1444 Air/Water Valve: Insufflation and Cleaning Control in Endoscopic Procedures
The Olympus MAJ-1444 is an air/water valve designed for use with EVIS EXERA II series endoscopic systems, including the GF-UCT180 ultrasonic gastrovideoscope. This valve performs two essential functions in endoscopic examinations of the upper digestive tract: insufflation of air to improve visibility of the mucosa and irrigation of the lens with a water jet to maintain a clear image. It also allows the single-use balloon to be filled with sterile water.
The MAJ-1444 is installed directly on the air/water cylinder of the endoscope. Partial pressure on the valve triggers the supply of water for cleaning the lens. Pressing the valve fully triggers the water supply to the balloon via the dedicated channel. By covering the upper opening of the valve, the user activates air insufflation, which optimises the distension of the anatomical structures being observed.
This valve is a manually operated device designed to fit perfectly into its housing without requiring prior lubrication. Olympus recommends systematically testing the smooth operation of the valve before each use. A visual inspection should be carried out to check that the upper hole is not obstructed and that the spring and internal components show no signs of wear or cracks that could compromise its effectiveness or patient safety.
The MAJ-1444 is a consumable part; if any abnormalities are found during inspection (deformation, wear of seals, slow return after activation), it must be replaced immediately. Using a defective valve may compromise the proper performance of the procedure, for example by affecting image quality or increasing the risk of excessive insufflation.
Easy to install and maintain, this valve actively contributes to the success of ultrasound-guided examinations and therapeutic procedures performed with compatible Olympus endoscopes. It meets the safety, accuracy and quality requirements imposed in professional medical environments.
