MBJ20 – Transcutaneous jaundice detector: an essential tool for accurate and non-invasive neonatal screening
The MBJ20 is a portable medical device designed to quickly, reliably and non-invasively measure bilirubin concentration in newborns. Developed by M&B Electronic Instruments Co ., Ltd., this jaundice meter is intended for healthcare professionals specialising in neonatology, paediatrics, obstetrics and maternity care. Using a combination of advanced optics, precision electronics and digital information processing, the MBJ20 enables instant screening for neonatal jaundice without the need for blood sampling.
Hyperbilirubinemia is a common condition in newborns. It requires close monitoring to avoid serious neurological complications such as kernicterus. The MBJ20 has been specifically designed to provide a convenient, comfortable and fast solution for clinical monitoring of jaundice. Simply place the measuring probe on the infant's forehead or sternum to obtain an immediate reading, expressed in mg/dL or µmol/L, with an accuracy of ±1.5 mg/dL.
This detector is ideal for use in hospitals, clinics, maternity wards and doctors' surgeries. Its clear LCD screen, indicator lights (ready to measure) and intuitive three-button interface (Power, Reset, Set) make it easy to use, even in a busy hospital environment. In addition to its ergonomic design, it is lightweight (215 g with batteries), compact (176 × 59 × 35.5 mm), and powered by two AA batteries, making it easy to transport for mobile or home use.
The MBJ20 also offers features such as:
- Storage of the last 21 measurements for progressive monitoring;
- Average mode, allowing several successive measurements (up to 9) to be taken and an average value to be obtained, ideal for minimising variations due to infant movement;
- Customisable calibration, which allows results to be adjusted according to laboratory measurements;
- Change of measurement unit (mg/dL / µmol/L) with a single click, for better readability according to the habits of medical staff.
The MBJ20 can also be used during and after phototherapy, provided certain recommendations are followed: it is advisable to protect the measurement site with opaque patches (e.g. on the forehead between the eyebrows) to prevent light from affecting the results. In addition, the device can continue to function optimally if the conditions of use are observed (temperature, humidity, absence of strong electromagnetic fields).
Compliant with international safety standards (EN60601-1, EN980, CE marking), the MBJ20 guarantees safe and reliable use in demanding clinical environments. It is classified as Type B (applied part) and meets electromagnetic compatibility requirements. Its robust design and simple maintenance protocols (alcohol cleaning, regular checks, annual inspection) ensure optimal longevity and low maintenance costs.
The MBJ20 is an essential device for any healthcare professional involved in the screening and treatment of jaundice in newborns. It combines accuracy, speed, ease of use and portability, while eliminating the constraints associated with invasive methods. Whether in hospitals, maternity wards or outpatient clinics, the MBJ20 enables rapid and informed clinical decision-making, thereby contributing to better care for infants.
