Olympus MD-495 Biopsy Valve: Control and Hygiene in Endoscopy
Designed to integrate seamlessly with the EVIS EXERA endoscopic system, the Olympus MD-495 biopsy valve plays a strategic role in the safety and efficiency of bronchoscopic examinations. Used with BF-180 series video bronchoscopes, it allows biopsy forceps or other medical instruments to be inserted while maintaining the tightness of the working channel. This dual function not only ensures smooth instrument handling but also limits the risk of cross-contamination.
The MD-495 device is designed for reuse. It is therefore an integral part of post-procedure reconditioning protocols, including cleaning, disinfection and sterilisation. This valve is cleaned using a specific swab (BW-15B or BW-201B), in accordance with the strict recommendations set out in the Olympus manual. The aim is to remove all traces of organic residue to ensure an effective sterilisation cycle and prevent obstruction of the channel.
Compatibility with ethylene oxide sterilisation allows for thorough disinfection, in accordance with temperature, humidity and concentration parameters. This sterilisation method, recognised in hospitals for its effectiveness on sensitive devices, ensures the preservation of materials while reducing the risk of infection.
The ergonomic design of the MD-495 makes it easy to dismantle, ensuring easy visual inspection before each reuse. The part must be carefully examined after each cycle to detect any anomalies, cracks or persistent deposits. In case of doubt, Olympus recommends immediate replacement to preserve the integrity of the endoscopic system and patient safety.
At the heart of the nosocomial infection prevention strategy, the MD-495 is a reliable and durable link in the care chain. It meets the clinical requirements of hospitals while complying with local and international medical hygiene guidelines.
