Biofuge® Pico: Compact Microcentrifuge for Biological Separation Tasks
The Biofuge® Pico microcentrifuge by Heraeus is specifically designed to meet the needs of biological laboratories handling small-volume separation tasks. This non-refrigerated centrifuge stands out for its compactness and efficiency, making it ideal for laboratories with limited space or for benchtop use.
Its wide range of applications includes DNA and RNA precipitation, processing of PCR-amplified nucleic acids, separation of protein and antibody precipitates, enzymatic assays, removal of cell debris post-homogenization, and fractionation of bacterial or yeast cells. These capabilities make the Biofuge® Pico an essential tool for biologists, lab technicians, and life science researchers.
With a maximum capacity of 24 × 1.5/2 mL tubes, 4 PCR strips, or 32 individual PCR tubes, it accommodates the most common formats used in molecular biology. The polypropylene microlitre rotor is compatible with the centrifuge and is fully autoclavable, ensuring a high level of hygiene and safety. Its chemical resistance is another advantage for laboratories handling a variety of reagents.
Another key strength of the Biofuge® Pico is its speed and efficiency. The brushless induction motor, frequency-controlled, reaches a maximum speed of 13,000 rpm in just 15 seconds. Braking is equally rapid (12 seconds), reducing downtime between cycles and improving laboratory productivity. Even at full speed, noise levels remain below 55 dB, preserving a quiet and comfortable work environment.
The flat-panel control interface, equipped with the EASYcontrol™ system, is easy to clean and highly intuitive. It allows quick adjustment of parameters (speed, run time) and includes a "quick run" mode for short centrifugation tasks. The centrifuge automatically stores the last used settings, saving time during repetitive procedures. The lid opens with a single press, simplifying daily operation.
In terms of design, the galvanized steel chassis, stainless-steel centrifuge chamber, and plastic housing provide robustness, durability, and easy maintenance. Its small footprint (23 × 33 cm) and low height make rotor loading particularly accessible, even in confined spaces.
The Biofuge® Pico integrates seamlessly into any laboratory environment where performance, ease of use, and space optimization are top priorities. With its reliability, ergonomic design, and adaptability, it offers an efficient solution for all high-speed small-volume separation steps.
