miniDAWN TREOS: High-precision multi-angle light scattering instrument
The miniDAWN TREOS from Wyatt Technology is a state-of-the-art laser photometer specially designed for static light scattering (LS) measurements in biochemistry, polymer chemistry and materials science. This compact system integrates three detectors positioned at fixed angles of 49°, 90° and 131° relative to the incident beam, enabling simultaneous analysis of light scattered at different angles. It can be used as an online detector in chromatography systems (GPC/SEC) or in batch mode for spot analyses.
One of the major advantages of the miniDAWN TREOS is its ability to measure absolute molecular weight, gyration radius and polydispersity index without the need for external calibration or standard samples. Thanks to a 60 mW GaAs laser (stabilised at 50 mW at 658 nm), the device generates a narrow beam that maximises measurement accuracy, even at very low concentrations. The flow cell, with a total volume of only 70 µL, limits sample consumption and offers an excellent signal-to-noise ratio.
The optical structure is mounted on a single rigid base, ensuring maximum stability and minimising vibrations that could interfere with measurements. In addition, each photodetector is equipped with its own digital signal processor (DSP), which ensures direct conversion of the analogue signal to digital, thus eliminating interference from the environment.
The instrument is compatible with external detectors such as differential refractometers, UV detectors or viscometers, thanks to its auxiliary analogue inputs. These signals, combined with the scattering data, enable in-depth multidimensional analyses. Wyatt's ASTRA software offers powerful tools for analysis, including the generation of Zimm, Debye or Berry graphs.
The miniDAWN TREOS also offers options such as the COMET module for acoustic cell cleaning and QELS (Quasi-Elastic Light Scattering) for hydrodynamic size measurements in dynamics. Its intuitive interface, LCD screen and navigation buttons on the front panel facilitate diagnostic and parameter setting operations.
Compact, modular and extremely accurate, the miniDAWN TREOS is the obvious choice for demanding laboratories seeking to rigorously characterise the physical properties of macromolecules and colloidal particles in solution.
