neoBLUE® mini LED phototherapy lamp – Treatment of neonatal jaundice through performance and flexibility
The neoBLUE® mini from Natus Medical Inc. is an LED phototherapy lamp specifically developed for the treatment of hyperbilirubinemia in newborns. This condition, commonly known as neonatal jaundice, is characterized by an accumulation of bilirubin in the infant's blood, often visible as a yellowish discoloration of the skin. Effective and targeted phototherapy is crucial to prevent associated neurological complications. It is in this context that the neoBLUE mini system stands out as a high-performance, mobile and safe solution.
Compact and lightweight, the device consists of two main components: a blue LED light source housed in an ergonomic plastic casing, and an adjustable articulated arm with a mast mount. This configuration allows easy adaptation to different clinical environments, whether an incubator, a crib, a radiant warmer or an open table. Thanks to its adjustable arm, the light beam can be precisely directed, maintaining an ideal distance from the infant, typically 30.5 cm, for optimal light output of 30 to 35 µW/cm²/nm.
The blue light emitted, concentrated in a band from 450 to 470 nm, perfectly matches the absorption curve of bilirubin, maximising its effectiveness while limiting side effects. Unlike older generations of lamps, the neoBLUE mini emits virtually no UV or IR, thus avoiding the risk of overheating or skin damage.
Thermal management is also optimised: multiple vents ensure heat dissipation, maintaining the surface temperature at less than 10°C above ambient temperature after six hours of use at the optimal distance. Eye protection is essential during use, both for the child and for operators in the vicinity.
In terms of maintenance, the lamp has a light intensity adjustment potentiometer, accessible via the housing. The LEDs have a service life of approximately 3,000 hours, with minimal light degradation over time. The system is factory calibrated to ensure consistent intensity, and a photometer check every six months is recommended.
Power is supplied by a 12V DC adapter connected to a power supply unit, which is already integrated into the support arm. The cable is secured by grooves integrated into the arm. The system complies with international medical standards such as EN 60601-1 and UL2601-1.
The neoBLUE® mini is a neonatal phototherapy device designed to offer therapeutic efficacy, maximum safety and clinical ease of use. Thanks to its robust and flexible design, it can be easily integrated into any neonatal or intensive care unit.
