Particle Size Analysis with the NIMBUS by Sympatec
The NIMBUS by Sympatec is a compact and efficient laboratory device designed for particle size analysis in highly concentrated suspensions and emulsions. Using ultrasonic extinction technology, this instrument analyzes low-viscosity fluid samples in their original state, eliminating the need for dilution or complex preparation. This acoustic method offers exceptional capabilities for measuring particle sizes from less than 0.1 µm to 3,000 µm, even in opaque media inaccessible to traditional optical methods.
The NIMBUS operates by circulating the sample in a controlled circuit, where it is analyzed using low-energy ultrasound in a flow measuring cell. The system delivers a particle size distribution across 31 categories every 1 to 2 minutes and determines the concentration of dispersed solids or droplets, providing a comprehensive analysis.
One of the strengths of the NIMBUS is its acoustic measurement principle. Sound waves are transmitted through the sample via a high-frequency piezoelectric transducer, and the residual sound energy is captured by a second transducer. The attenuation, or ultrasonic extinction, is calculated from the ratio of emitted to received energy, determining the particle size distribution with a resolution of 31 points. The extinction function, crucial for evaluation, is determined during device setup and stored for each sample type, ensuring consistent accuracy without recalibration.
The NIMBUS measuring circuit features a centrifugal pump that ensures continuous circulation and homogeneous dispersion of the sample. The short path and stainless steel piping guarantee high-quality analysis without material buildup or sample carryover. Additionally, the lowerable basin bottom allows for quick draining and cleaning.
Analysis is initiated with a mouse click in the control and evaluation software, with results automatically displayed as particle size distribution, trend graph for long-term analyses, or individual measurement values in a table.
The NIMBUS is a robust system with high chemical resistance to aggressive media, capable of operating at product temperatures up to 50°C. All components in contact with samples are made from resistant materials: the measurement zone, piping, and storage tank are stainless steel, acoustic windows are vitreous carbon (Sigradur®), and seals are FKM (with options for EPDM, NBR, FFKM (Kalrez®)). Mechanically stressed parts are made from durable PTFE (Teflon™) or polyamide 12 G, ensuring optimal durability and reliability.
