Beckman Coulter S2096 rotor: versatile performance and optimised safety for microplate centrifugation
The Beckman Coulter S2096 rotor is an essential component for laboratories using Allegra and Spinchron series centrifuges, including the X-22, X-30, 21 and GS-15 models. This swing-bucket rotor features a dual-slot design and can accommodate up to three stacked microplates or one deep plate per bucket, with a total depth of 40.6 mm. Constructed from black anodised aluminium, it offers excellent corrosion resistance and increased durability even under heavy use. The swivel buckets, secured to the axes with pins, rotate horizontally during centrifugation, ensuring even distribution of centrifugal force across the samples.
This rotor is designed to offer optimum safety thanks to its tie-down screw fastening system and the integration of magnets that allow the centrifuge to identify the speed of the rotor during use. This overspeed device protects the user against excessive speeds. The rotor reaches its full speed (3000 rpm) in 21 seconds with deceleration in 20 seconds. Each cup can withstand a maximum load of 320 g, provided that load symmetry is maintained to ensure stability during rotation.
In terms of compatibility, the S2096 supports a wide range of Beckman Coulter microplates, including 96-well plates (standard, deep, sterile or non-sterile) and square plates. It is essential to use only accessories and consumables approved by Beckman Coulter to ensure safety and preserve the rotor warranty. The system is also designed for temperatures between 2 and 25°C, with the option of pre-cooling to optimise cold performance.
The S2096 rotor is also robust in terms of cleaning and decontamination. It can be washed regularly with Beckman Solution 555 detergent, autoclaved at 121°C, and disinfected with 70% ethanol or hydrogen peroxide. Preventive maintenance includes regular inspection for signs of corrosion or wear, ensuring long-term reliability. In the event of biological or radioactive contamination, specific procedures must be followed before reuse.
With its proven design, extensive compatibility with different types of microplates and ease of use, the S2096 rotor is an ideal choice for clinical, research or biotechnology laboratories that demand performance, safety and versatility.
