SpeedVac DNA130 vacuum concentrator: optimised drying technology for DNA and RNA
The SpeedVac DNA130 from Thermo Scientific is a vacuum concentration system specifically designed for drying small volumes of solvents containing DNA, RNA or other sensitive biomolecules. It is a compact benchtop device that combines centrifugation, heat and vacuum to optimise evaporation rates while preserving sample integrity.
One of the key features of the SpeedVac DNA130 is its integrated oil-free diaphragm pump, which eliminates the maintenance requirements associated with traditional oil-based pumps. This pump achieves a final vacuum of less than 10 torr, while providing a displacement flow rate of 36 L/min at 60 Hz. This vacuum performance enables fast drying even at room temperature, minimising the risk of sample denaturation.
Thermal control is another major advantage of this device. The DNA130 allows precise adjustment of the chamber temperature from 35°C to 65°C in 5°C increments. This feature is essential to counteract the cooling effect of evaporation and ensure uniform drying. A continuous heating mode (CCC) is available for applications requiring a constant temperature throughout the cycle. The rear fan maintains the ambient temperature in the chamber when no heating is applied.
The digital control panel is easy to use, offering three customisable programmes, a manual mode and an automatic mode. In automatic mode, the unit adjusts the duration and temperature according to the set parameters and stops automatically at the end of the cycle, allowing for unattended operation. In manual mode, the user can stop the process at any time. A USB interface allows real-time export of operating data to a computer, facilitating documentation and traceability.
User safety is ensured by a lid locking mechanism during operation, which prevents accidental opening when the chamber is under vacuum or the rotor is rotating. A manual unlocking tool is provided to allow opening in the event of a power failure.
Compatible with different rotors, the DNA130 can accommodate tubes from 0.5 to 2.0 mL as well as microtitre plates thanks to its optional RD2MP rotor. Accessories such as chemical traps or neutralising filters are available for safe vapour management, particularly when using volatile or radioactive solvents.
Designed for laboratory use, it operates under ambient conditions (17°C to 32°C, 20% to 80% RH) and can be installed under a fume hood. Thanks to its robustness, ease of use and efficiency, the SpeedVac DNA130 is the optimal choice for molecular biology, genomics or research laboratories requiring safe and rapid concentration of small sample volumes.
