SpeedVac SPD140DDA: a high-performance vacuum concentrator for fast and safe sample drying
The SpeedVac™ SPD140DDA from Thermo Scientific is a versatile, high-performance vacuum concentrator designed to meet the sample concentration and drying requirements of modern laboratories . This benchtop system is capable of rapidly removing a wide variety of solvents, including volatile, corrosive and high-boiling solvents, while ensuring almost complete recovery of solutes without compromising sample integrity.
This concentrator operates on a combined principle of vacuum, heat and centrifugal force. The vacuum, supplied by an external source, lowers the pressure in the chamber, facilitating the evaporation of solvents at moderate temperatures. The rotation of the rotor prevents violent boiling or foaming that could cause material loss. Heat, provided by integrated radiant lamps and a heated lid, compensates for the cooling effect caused by evaporation and accelerates the process while maintaining the thermal stability of the samples.
The user interface is intuitive and allows precise control of parameters via a digital display and multifunction control panel. The user can select from 4 preset programmes for common applications or store up to 8 customised programmes according to the specific requirements of their experimental protocols. The system is also equipped with a digital vacuum sensor that allows continuous monitoring of the pressure in the chamber, ensuring optimal process control.
The SPD140DDA stands out for its robust construction and exceptional chemical resistance. Components in contact with vapours are made exclusively from Teflon® or coated with Teflon®, ensuring compatibility with the most aggressive solvents such as DMSO, DMF, TFA or methylene chloride. A fresh air purge system and an optional vapour collector further enhance the safety and durability of the system.
Compact yet powerful, the SPD140DDA is suitable for small laboratories as well as industrial and university environments. It accepts a wide variety of rotors for microcentrifuge tubes, conical tubes, vials and microtitre plates. It can be integrated into a complete system comprising a vacuum pump and a refrigerated vapour trap to form a complete evaporation platform, perfectly suited to the requirements of analytical or preparative applications.
This vacuum concentrator is therefore an essential tool for the efficient and reliable processing of samples containing solvents to be evaporated in fields as varied as proteomics, peptide purification, HPLC analysis and sensitive chemical preparations.
