Vivaspin® 2: a High-Performance Concentrator for Medical and Biological Applications
The Vivaspin® 2 from Sartorius is an essential solution in biology and medical research laboratories. Specially designed for the concentration of diluted biological samples, this single-use ultrafiltration device can process volumes of up to 2 ml. Its compact size and patented vertical design, which incorporates a narrow channel chamber, significantly reduce membrane clogging. This results in high and consistent centrifugation speeds, even with fluids rich in macromolecules or particulate contaminants.
The Vivaspin® 2 stands out for its compatibility with various types of membranes depending on the sample requirements. It is available with polyethersulfone (PES), cellulose triacetate (TAC) or Hydrosart® membranes, a particularly hydrophilic regenerated cellulose that reduces protein adsorption. This choice allows the device to be adapted to the specific requirements of each protocol, whether for desalting, buffer exchange or recovery of proteins of interest.
In terms of handling, the user can recover the concentrate directly from the lower chamber or by reverse centrifugation in the collection cap. This dual option enhances the flexibility of the Vivaspin®, which can also be closed for temporary storage of the sample. The low dead volume (< 10 µl) and optimised membrane surface area (1.2 cm²) ensure optimal recovery, which is essential in sensitive analytical processes.
The Vivaspin® 2 is designed for use with centrifuges compatible with 15 ml conical tubes, with fixed or swing-out rotors (minimum angle 25°). It is ideal for handling proteins, enzymes, antibodies or other biomolecules in medical or research settings, excluding in vitro diagnostics.
The membranes are available in different molecular weight cut-offs (MWCO) ranging from 2,000 to 1,000,000 Da, as well as in a 0.2 µm version, ensuring precise control of the separation process according to the size of the molecules to be concentrated or filtered.
