CL Toco+MP: Wireless Uterine Contraction and Maternal Pulse Monitoring for Optimal Obstetric Safety
The CL Toco+MP (Philips reference 866075) is a next-generation transducer developed for the Philips Avalon fetal monitoring systems. Part of the “Smart Transducers” family, it combines advanced technological precision with patient mobility. This sensor continuously monitors external uterine pressure (Toco) and maternal heart rate (MP) using Philips' patented Smart Pulse technology, integrated directly beneath the transducer’s surface.
Designed to enhance clinical safety, the CL Toco+MP addresses a crucial challenge in perinatal care: preventing confusion between fetal and maternal heart rates, which can lead to critical errors. Through two embedded infrared sensors, maternal pulse is measured without additional electrodes or external devices. This non-invasive approach minimizes patient discomfort while maximizing data reliability.
The Smart Transducer technology allows signal processing to occur directly within the transducer, enabling robust digital transmission with minimal electromagnetic interference. Analog-to-digital conversion and real-time analysis are performed near the source, ensuring exceptional signal accuracy. Thanks to its bi-directional communication protocol, the sensor can interact with the monitor for user-friendly features like the blue Finder LED, helping clinicians quickly locate the correct transducer when repositioning is needed.
The wireless design (CL stands for Cableless) allows patients to move freely within a 100-meter range in line of sight from the Avalon CL base station. It even supports monitoring during partial water immersion, which is particularly beneficial for physiological or low-intervention labor strategies. The transducer automatically connects to the CL base station and compatible Avalon monitor, ensuring fast and easy setup. Its universal fetal socket compatibility allows connection to any sensor port on the monitor.
The Cross-Channel Verification (CCV) function adds another layer of safety by comparing all heart rate channels in real time to detect suspicious overlaps between maternal and fetal heart rates. If a match is detected, the system triggers a visual and audible INOP alarm, enabling immediate response by medical staff.
The transducer also features an ergonomic design that prioritizes maternal comfort, even during extended use. Its shape and smooth surface minimize pressure on the abdomen. The unit is water-resistant and fitted with a replaceable cable, extending its useful life. These combined features make it an ideal tool for continuous, reliable, and non-invasive monitoring during labor and delivery, especially in high-risk or multiple pregnancies.
