The Tec 5 Continuous Flow Vaporizer by Datex-Ohmeda is a state-of-the-art medical device designed for use in inhalation anesthesia. To select an ON setting, simply pull the release mechanism and simultaneously rotate the dial counterclockwise.

The Tec 5 vaporizer also incorporates an interlock mechanism that works with the Selectatec Series Mounted Manifold to ensure that only one vaporizer can be turned ON at a time when multiple Tec 4, Tec 5, or Tec 6 vaporizers are installed. This mechanism also ensures that the gas flow enters only the vaporizer that is turned ON, minimizing any unwanted anesthetic vapor traces after the vaporizer is turned OFF.

Each Tec 5 vaporizer is agent-specific and clearly labeled with the name of the anesthetic agent for which it is designed. The vaporizer is designed to be used on Selectatec Series Mounted Manifolds but can also be installed on other Selectatec manifolds, although the interlock system is designed to function only on Selectatec Series Mounted Manifolds.

The Tec 5 is equipped with a temperature compensation device that uses a bimetallic strip to control the resistance offered to the gas flow through it. This device helps maintain a consistent vaporizer output, even with temperature variations. If the vaporizer temperature decreases, the thermostat closes, reducing the bypass flow and increasing the flow through the vaporizing chamber. Conversely, if the vaporizer temperature increases, the thermostat opens, increasing the bypass flow and reducing the flow through the vaporizing chamber.

The Tec 5 is also designed for easy maintenance. It is recommended to drain the vaporizer and discard the agent when the agent level is low, ideally every two weeks. This helps preserve the drug's purity by removing oxidized impurities, accumulated contaminants, and stabilizers. Less frequent intervals may be used when the anesthetic agent does not contain additives or stabilizing agents.
